Industrial Heritage Group kick off its research about the Royal Navy

Since its formation some three years ago as a spin off of the Science Group, Industrial Heritage Group members have undertaken a substantial amount of research on past industries of Kent and the Wealden area. Topics have included the iron industry, Tanning, Glass making, Kent windmills, the Telegraph, Beer making, Kent Canals, Silk and Paper making and many more. Members research a topic then give a presentation to the group on the subject. Over the next year the group plan to undertake research on the industries that supported the Royal Navy in Kent, particularly with a focus on Chatham Dockyard.

To kick off this research project, John Stambollouian gave an excellent presentation about the history of Chatham Dockyard from Tudor times. The talk entitled Chatham Dockyard - the Rise and Fall of the Military Industrial Complex, covered the history of the Dockyard through to its closure in 1984 and the hard work to transform it into an important Kent museum.

Members will be visiting the Dockyard for its June meeting.
