Over the year the Day Walking Group clock up close to a 100 miles of walking and burn off some 150,000 calories (they probably put quite a few back on again as the walks usually include a pub lunch stop!). Their March walk from Bidborough to Penshurst via Speldhurst and back, with lunch at the Leicester Arms at Penshurst, was memorable for the usual excellent views of the Wealden countryside, a number of ancient buildings and beautiful spring flowers - wood anemone, primroses and sweet violets – both violet and white, and a few early bluebells.
The 10.5 mile walk, which took in parts of the long distance footpath, the Wealdway, started outside one of the oldest churches in the area – Bidborough church parts of which date back to the 10th century. The countryside enclosed by Bidborough, Speldhurst and Penhurst provides a number of opportunities to construct a walk of 5 miles or more over fairly easy walking ground. All you need is some good walking boots, a compass and OS Explorer Map 147 – Sevenoaks and Tonbridge. Reasonable road parking near Bidborough church.
