The Universite de Troisieme Age (u3a) originated in France in 1973 as an extra mural activity at the University of Social Science in Toulouse and the first u3a was established in the UK in 1981, loosely based on the French system.

For more on the  history of the u3a in UK, please see  The_u3a_story by_Francis_Beckett_Web

In 2009 an enthusiastic small group of local people came together to launch Knole u3a, its name chosen to reflect the connection to Sevenoaks.

Since then, we have gone from strength to strength and now at the start of  2025 have grown to almost 500 members. We currently offer 67 study groups, giving members the opportunity to for example improve foreign language skills, enjoy walks exploring the local countryside and the hidden back streets of London, learn new board games, join current affairs discussion group, explore local history.  And our monthly Science group invites knowledgeable speakers to give talks on a broad range of topics.

No qualifications are needed to join, just enthusiasm, curiosity and, because u3as are run by members, for its members, a willingness to contribute to its functioning in some way. This might be contributing to the successful running of any Group you join, admin help, providing refreshments at monthly meetings and even serving on committee.

The u3a is open to anyone who is retired or semi-retired, giving the opportunity to meet others and share your knowledge and experience through open meetings, joining any of the study group and perhaps in the administrative side of Knole. The Annual membership runs from July 1st to June 30th and the current fee is £12 per person pa.

Bat and Ball Community Centre, Crampton’s Road, Sevenoaks TN14 5DN  between 2.00 and 4.00pm.

Next Meeting:  26th Jan: Jo Livingston - Fire - A Century of the volunteer Fire Brigade.

Science Group

We have three talks lined up for the first quarter of next year. The first thing to say is that in January the talk will be on 8th January, the second Thursday, as New Years Day is on the first Thursday. All are as usual in the Weald Memorial Hall starting at 2:30pm. The talks are:

8th January “Steam” Given by Howard Dilley

This talk will go through the history of the use of steam in powering industrial machines and changing the life of this country and others for all time. It changed how men and women work in our factories. It totally changed transport, and therefore commuting, and helped bring electricity to our homes and is still the main way of generating it.

5th February "Astronomy - from the Ground Up". Given by Brian Mills

The talk deals with a lot of the basics of astronomy, looking at the Sun, Moon and planets (why there are only 8 of them now), how they move and how they were formed. We'll also see what units we use for distance measurements in astronomy and apply them to see how big the Milky Way is. We look at how events such as eclipses occur and consider if we are likely to be alone in the universe.

5th March The Sex Life of Fungi. Given by Alan Heyes

As there are millions of fungi there is a lot to choose from. Alan returns to speaking to us with another interesting talk.
